Applicants are expected to clearly articulate their research topics in the application by submitting a concise and well-structured research proposal. Thesis topics investigate more specific issues within individual or combined research areas, and do not necessarily correspond to individual academic disciplines. Instead, they are often interdisciplinary in nature, involving faculty and resources from other graduate schools at Harvard and contribute to expanding the intellectual range of design research. The GSD offers a dynamic setting for the exchange of ideas across the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, urban design, real estate, design studies, and design engineering—united in the pursuit of a more just, coherent, and beautiful world. Our world faces increasingly complex, often unpredictable dilemmas of consequence to human lives and living environments, including rapid urbanization, climate change, and resource scarcity. The MDE program prepares innovators who operate both creatively and analytically, think strategically, and collaborate broadly.

This work designs the optical system of SHOT to obtain a large FOV of up to 1.5 deg and match the detector with the size of 60 mm × 60 mm and pixel pitch of 0.8 mm. By adding a corrector lens to the optical system and optimization, the aberrations mainly caused by the optical elements in the detector system are reduced. The influence of each component assigned to different terahertz materials is analyzed. Like many other participants, Jennifer Pieszak, a member of Community Rowing, saw room for improvement in the project. Cole D. Rainey-Slavick, a Somerville resident, said the state’s lack of interest in cutting lanes clashed with their climate goals and professed commitments to reducing car-dependency across Massachusetts. As it stands now, the realignment would bring 12 lanes of traffic across the turnpike and Soldiers Field Road down to ground level.

Common to the diverse range of DDes research investigations is the belief that design research makes essential contributions to understanding, analyzing and ultimately improving the built environment in our increasingly complex world. In 1900, the first urban planning courses were taught at Harvard University, and by 1909, urban planning courses taught by James Sturgis Pray were added to Harvard's design curriculum as part of the then School of Landscape Architecture. In 1923, a specialization in urban planning was established under the degree program of Master in Landscape Architecture. In 1929, North America's first urban planning degree (at the graduate level) was established at Harvard under short-term funding from the Rockefeller Foundation.
As of 2016, the program's ten-year average ranking places it first, overall, on DesignIntelligence's ranking of programs accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. Distinct from research in the sciences or humanities, design pedagogy involves highly interactive ways of thinking and learning that directly engage the technical, material, spatial, ecological, political, economic, and planetary dimensions of cultural life. Ultimately, MDes at the GSD challenges conventional ways of learning, and achieves a scope and diversity that are unmatched by any other design school in the world. The Harvard Graduate School of Design does not discriminate against applicants or students on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry or any other protected classification. The Graduate School of Design educates leaders in design, research, and scholarship to make a resilient, just, and beautiful world.
The Graduate School of Design is home to several degree programs, including the world’s oldest landscape architecture program and North America’s longest-standing urban planning program. Keep in mind that you can combine almost any two master’s programs to earn concurrent degrees. The three major design professions (architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture) were officially united in 1936 to form the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Joseph F. Hudnut (1886–1968) was an American architect scholar and professor who was the first dean.

Most caps are 6 panel caps with a seam in the center of the front crown but there are also 5 panel and 8 panel caps. 5 panel caps are mainly used for “trucker caps” or caps that have screen printing on the front instead of embroidery. Panels are sewn together with thread matching the color of the cap material or with a contrasting color. Fabric of the panels is normally cotton twill and can be brushed or made thicker if needed. Other fabric types are wool, mesh or performance materials that allow for greater moisture wicking or ventilation.

Country homes come in one- and two-story designs and are typically finished in wood siding for a clean, simple look. Low country house plans are typically only found in Southern, marshy climates and differ quite a bit from country house plans. Low country house plans are more like coastal house plans because they're frequently raised and resting on piers to capture cooling breezes and prevent flooding of the main house. Country house plans are similar to farmhouse-style homes, making the designs relatively close in style and appearance. The color palates are muted and natural, and the accents and decor will look more antique or distressed.

These exterior elements make country house plans easily recognizable, as do the use of overhead window dormers, gabled rooflines, and abundant window views. Adding some outdoor living space promotes casual living by highlighting the indoor/outdoor living space as a seamless design element that provides a welcoming place for all to gather. The appeal and comfort of a Country house plan makes this a natural choice for relaxing year-round living.

Simple, detailed plans to add extra light to any home
The history of country homes dates back to the early days of the United States, when settlers were building homes in rural areas. These homes were often constructed using local materials such as wood and stone, and were designed to be simple and practical. While combining modern and country design aesthetics might seem contradictory, the two can work together well. The modern master suite includes a vaulted ceiling over the bedroom, a walk-in closet, and a bathroom with a soaking tub and glass shower.

By the late 19th century, wealthy families were building grand country estates that were designed to showcase their wealth and status. The materials were often top-notch, and nearly 100 years later many of these small, old houses are eagerly sought after. The second floor boasts a very private master suite (with a generous walk-in closet space and a luxurious bathroom).

One of the most notable features of country homes is their use of natural materials. These homes are often constructed with wood, stone, and other materials that blend in with the natural surroundings.

The 9 Best Northern Lights Alaska Cruises for 2024 & Beyond
However, finding a spot with minimal light interference from the ship is crucial. But as we’ve explored, the Northern Lights are but one facet of the allure these destinations offer. From Alaska’s towering glaciers and rich indigenous culture to Norway’s picturesque coastal towns and the untouched beauty of Greenland, the journey to see the aurora can be as rewarding as the destination itself.
Northern lights cruises: A guide to chasing the aurora borealis at sea
Exploring the polar regions provides you with opportunities like no other. Traveling with UnCruise also grants exclusive access to remote areas, as their ships, with capacities ranging from 22 to 86 guests, navigate areas where larger vessels can’t. UnCruise guests visiting Glacier Bay National Park get a rare opportunity to set foot on land and explore the “outback,” a privilege granted to less than one percent of total park visitors. On my Princess cruise in September, there was a northern lights photographer on the cruise ship who did northern lights talks.
Must-Have Travel Accessories
In the next section, we’ll explore the onboard activities and amenities that make Alaskan cruises with Northern Lights viewing even more memorable. In the next section, we’ll provide you with some valuable tips to increase your chances of witnessing the Northern Lights during your Alaskan cruise. The most common colors of the Northern Lights are green and yellow, which are caused by collisions with oxygen molecules at lower altitudes.
Best Time of Year to See the Lights in Alaska
You’ll make stops in the coastal towns of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Anchorage (Whittier) before disembarking to depart for the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge via the line’s direct-to-the-wilderness rail service. From Whittier, there are many options to transfer to Anchorage (by rail or by road), including the iconic Glacier Discovery Train. Plan to stay a few evenings in Anchorage with a multiday guided aurora tour, or reserve a spot on an evening outing in search of the northern lights. While cruises offer a unique perspective, many land-based locations in Alaska, such as Fairbanks, offer excellent opportunities for aurora viewing, often paired with other activities like hot springs or dog sledding.
Although the full viewing season spans from March to September, you’ll have the greatest chance of witnessing the Borealis’ emergence in September, when skies are so much darker than during the summer cruise season. Incidentally, this is also the time when you’ll find cost savings on your cruise since most families tend to vacation while school is out. If you’re interested in a cruise-only option and would prefer to arrange the land portion independently, consider this seven-day voyage on Nieuw Amsterdam.
By night you will seek out the Northern Lights, but by day we will try to get you off the ship 2-3 times per day (depending on the weather and conditions) so you can get the most out of your time in the Arctic. Walking and bird-watching are popular activities as they offer a chance to witness the unique wildlife in the destinations you visit. Increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights or aurora borealis on a small ship expedition cruise that takes you deep into the Arctic, to iconic destinations such as Greenland, Iceland and Norway. But of course, the northern lights in Greenland can also be seen in many other places like Kangerlussuaq, Disko Bay and Nuuk (all in West Greenland). The top Greenland Northern lights cruises are listed below, but view all our Greenland cruises to see more available itineraries that offer you a chance if timed right. Specializing in polar voyages, Quark Expeditions knows a thing or two about the northern lights, which is why the company offers aurora sailings each fall. These 14-day itineraries cruise from Iceland to Greenland and back from September into early October. And if they don't show, well, you still get to explore Iceland's Westfjords and Greenland's eastern shores — and that's a worthwhile journey in itself.
Alaska Cruisetours to See the Northern Lights
The 12-Night Great National Parks Expedition Cruisetour (6A Northbound) is perfect for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts, and offers even more time in Alaska’s breathtaking national parks like Denali and Kenai Fjords. Dreaming about seeing the Northern Lights is easy; figuring out the logistics of viewing those shimmering colors in the nighttime sky aren’t so simple. A Northern Lights cruise takes the stress out of planning, lodging, and even transportation to destinations like Iceland, Alaska, and more. Seeing the Northern Lights is one of those magical experiences on nearly every traveler’s bucket list due to the surreal way light moves in waves of green color across the nighttime sky. The next day will be in Narvik, a fishing village that can trace its history to the Stone Age but that has held township status only since the early 20th century. There travelers can ride the Ofoten Railway for a day trip to Sweden, hike to Frostisen Glacier, or ski at the Narvikfjellet ski resort.
Generally, the Northern Lights themselves do not affect electronic equipment. However, solar storms that enhance aurora activity can, in extreme cases, interfere with satellite and communication systems. Research, pack appropriately for cold weather, bring necessary photography equipment, familiarize yourself with the ship’s amenities, and remain flexible in your expectations given the unpredictable nature of the aurora.
Ultimately, the best time to see the Northern Lights in Alaska depends on your personal preferences and willingness to handle cold weather. Next, we’ll explore the Alaska cruise routes that offer the best chances of witnessing this awe-inspiring natural wonder. Alaska’s position within the auroral oval, a region near the North Pole where the Northern Lights are most commonly visible, provides ample opportunities to witness this extraordinary natural phenomenon. The combination of Alaska’s proximity to the Earth’s magnetic pole, low light pollution, and vast open spaces make it an ideal destination for Northern Lights enthusiasts. Planning your Alaskan cruise around the Northern Lights offers a unique way to explore the rugged beauty of the Last Frontier while chasing the ethereal glow that illuminates the night sky. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a photography enthusiast, or simply someone captivated by the beauty of celestial displays, an Alaska cruise will provide you with an unforgettable experience.
Selecting the right cruise and route can significantly influence your Northern Lights experience. But no matter the choice, Alaska’s seas promise a journey of wonder, filled with nature’s best spectacles, both in the sky and on the horizon. While there are several ways to chase the Northern Lights, a cruise offers distinct benefits. As we sail through this guide, remember that the Northern Lights are a blend of predictability and serendipity. While science and planning enhance your chances, there’s always a touch of magic in every aurora sighting.
👆 Look for the night mode in your camera settings to take better pictures of the northern lights on your phone. The following night (night of the October 26th into the 27th), I stayed up and went out onto the open deck to look for northern lights. So if you have a port day the following day, then you have to decide which is more important. The POTENTIAL to see northern lights, or being well-rested for your next port day. 🤪 So you might need to sacrifice your sleep in order to see the northern lights.

2023 Year in Review: The 10 Top Cruise Stories - Cruise Industry News
The line has a second new ship, the 4,810-passenger MSC Euribia, too, which will debut later in 2023 — in June, if all goes according to plan. At around 182,000 tons, it won't be quite as big as MSC World Europa but will still be one of the biggest cruise vessels in the world. Like the Oasis-class ships, it's able to hold nearly 7,000 passengers with all berths filled — 6,762, to be exact. Note that in some cases, the new ships coming in 2023 will arrive months behind schedule due to ongoing pandemic-related construction delays at the shipyards that are building them. Thanks to these delays, the first sailings of a few ships that were expected to debut in 2023 — including Royal Caribbean's much-awaited Icon of the Seas — have been pushed to 2024.
Let’s look at some of the major cruise lines and see what they have in store for 2023. This ultra-luxe ship is one of the most environmentally conscious ships in the world. It’s equipped with a large-scale hybrid power source, which combines hydrogen fuel cells, batteries, and dual engines that run on LNG. MSC Cruises recently laid out the framework for its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Regent Seven Seas Grandeur Will Push the Envelope for Luxury on a Ship
She’s the first ship in the world to use advanced hybrid technology, which means there will be zero harmful emissions while the ship is in port, leading the way in eco-friendly cruising. There are a selection of dining venues, including some that offer speciality dishes based on the region that the ship is sailing. But it’s Viking’s commitment to enrichment that will take the fore – expect fascinating talks to be held by the cruise line’s resident historians, as well as cookery classes, wine tastings and more. The recently renewed Swan Hellenic brand will add to its current fleet of two new ships with yet another.
Norwegian Viva (Norwegian Cruise Line)
As for decor and amenities, Oceania has promised an "evolution" of the intimate, residential-style interior venues for which its ships are known. At 67,000 tons, Vista will be a tad bigger than Oceania's last two new ships, Marina and Riviera. However, it'll carry fewer passengers (1,200 versus 1,250), meaning its "space ratio" of space per passenger will be higher. MSC World Europa is initially sailing in the Persian Gulf out of Dubai but will reposition to the Mediterranean for the summer of 2023.
“Seven Seas Grandeur” from Seven Seas Cruises
MSC Euribia is named after the Greek goddess, Eurybia, who harnessed the winds and weather to master the seas. Celebrity goes for a more serene feel on its ships, so you won’t find any water slides or rock climbing walls on the Ascent, but there will be plenty of theaters and shows. On the super-luxe Silver Nova, the restaurant S.A.L.T. will focus on culinary education and local food culture. Welcome to ultimate luxury—a Regent Suite on the forthcoming Seven Seas Grandeur. Norwegian Viva will be a big ship but with more intimate touches like the fine Italian dining venue Onda by Scarpetta (pictured in the rendering). Now, she helps over 1 million people per month to plan their perfect cruise holidays.
Oceania Vista
Plus, sailing in or out of PortMiami as the city unfolds or fades in the distance is one of the most magical moments in cruising. MSC’s gorgeous MSC Yacht Club is proof that not all luxury suite complexes are created equal. This private enclave boasts all the requisite perks you might expect, from lavish suites to grand lounges and private dining areas. MSC sets itself apart by making that complex more accessible than ever before, thanks to the line’s value-priced MSC Yacht Club Inside Staterooms that provide a lot of luxe for a little dough. Second in Norwegian’s Prima Class cruise ships, Viva will be the 19th ship in the NCL fleet.

Icon of the Seas was originally expected to debut at the end of 2023, but now the ship will begin sailing from Miami, Florida, on seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries in January 2024. This ship will no doubt already be sailing before that, including a transatlantic journey.
The ship will offer seven new suite categories and new premium aft suites, a new wellness program, and a new comfort food menu for in-room dining. This new cruise ship features an LNG power system that reduces its greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20%. Its advanced onboard wastewater treatment system ensures that no water leaves the ship without undergoing strict treatments that reduce pollution and harm to local ecosystems. Smart energy efforts have also been applied to the ship’s waste elimination, climate control and ventilation. For the first time ever for Oceania, the ship will offer a new category of concierge-level staterooms that are designed with solo travelers in mind.
Expect on the 750-passenger, all-suite Seven Seas Grandeur the brand’s signature extravagances such as marble floors, crystal chandeliers, gold leaf here, and expensive art there. Some of the new tech that will help it get there includes Climeon, units that use heat from the ship’s engines to generate a portion of the electricity on board (which decreases fuel demand). The smart bracelet that unlocks passengers’ cabin doors is made of recycled plastic. The Edge-class ships consume 20 percent less fuel when compared to the line’s previous generation of vessels.

While no other reunion dates, or recording plans, have yet been announced, Creed will take part in a live Q&A during the Summer of ’99 cruise that will be open to all attendees.
Unfortunately, the group hasn’t released an album since their Full Circle project back in 2009, and called it quits back in 2012. From Nickelback, to 3 Doors Down, Hinder, Creed, The Goo Goo Dolls, Fuel, and more, they’re all bands with songs that’ll get you nostalgic in a heartbeat. Alright, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a sucker for that late ’90s/early 2000s hard rock. The first 500 cabins booked will have an exclusive opportunity for a photo session with the members of Creed themselves. Sirius XM DJ Eddie Trunk will co-host both cruises alongside the trio from AXS TV's The Power Hour show — Matt Pinfield, Caity Babs and Josh Bernstein. The Summer of '99 and Beyond cruise will be held on the Norwegian Jade cruise ship from April 27-May 1, departing from Port Canaveral in Florida, also venturing to the Bahamas.
The band announced plans for an extensive North American tour, set to launch on July 17 at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The run wraps up on September 28 at Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Very special guests for the trek will be 3 Doors Down, Daughtry, Switchfoot, Tonic, Big Wreck, and Finger Eleven on select dates. Yesterday in Miami, Florida, Creed set sail on their highly anticipated Summer of ’99 Cruise. The venture marks the multi-platinum rockers first live performances in over a decade.
